Legendary artists are treated with a charming lack of piety in this costume drama about the bohemian French writer George Sand (Judy Davis) and her amorous pursuit of composer Frederic Chopin (Hugh Grant). She is handicapped in this pursuit by rival lovers, notably the handsome but not-too-bright Felicien Mallefille, played by George Corraface. He keeps fighting duels to prove a devotion that utterly bores her.Other notable portrayals in this popular and highly lauded movie are that of fellow composer Franz Liszt (Julian Sands), his scheming mistress Marie d’Agoult (Bernadette Peters), poet Alfred de Musset (Mandy Patinkin), and a flighty pretentious, artistically minded rich Duchess (Emma Thompson), who hosts a weekend for famous musicians, artists, and writers of the day at her country home, where Sand first tries to profess her love for Chopin.
